Background

Getting into the medical student trends is an important issue in decreasing the teacher- student's age gap which might help us to get along with them and makes the knowledge more accesible.

Recent technologic advances in mobile devices, using the famous chat application becomes a simple, ordinary and flavoured way to communicate and exchanges information for the newer generation. This application also allows us to transmit digital images among medical students and surgical staffs in almost real time mannered. .

We report our experience with LINE chat application in how it facilitates the correct diagnosis and briefs of clinical management for the 5th year medical students. We aim to encourage the learning process of the 5th year medical students via the picture spot diagnosis using Line chat application.

This study  aim to evaluate the feedback of using the LINE chat application to facilitate the learning process of spot surgical diagnosis for medical student.

Summary of Work

- We include 5 surgical staffs from diffrent field ( 2 general surgeon, 1 plastic surgeon, 1 neurosurgeon and 1 pediatric surgeon) and 11 of the 5th year medical students on the surgical rotation in our hospital during June - Dec 2014.

- On our preliminary survey, we found that all of medical staffs (5/5, 100%) and medical students (11/11, 100%) have smart phone and/or tablet and frequently use chat application for everyday communication.

- The LINE chat application is the most famous chat application among us ( staffs= 100%, 5th year medical students= 100%) . All of the staffs and student frequently use this programme for exchange and transferred the information and knowledge.

We set up the Line chat group called " surgical spot diagnosis"  which all of the surgical staffs and surgical rotation medical students are enrolled as a member.

 - the staff will post the spot picture of the day with question about the diagnosis and management, the student must answer in a given time then the right answer will be posted right after.

- The  students and the staffs are freed to share and duscuss about the case question.

 - At the end of the rotaton, all of the students will recieve the questionare asking about the benefit of  the chat group.

Summary of Results

Most of the students participated and attended the chat group everyday.

The result showed that most of the students attended the chat group activity more than 4 times per day.

The questionnaire graded by satisfaction between 1(less likely) to 5(absolutely agree ).

Most of them felt that this chat group was a useful tool to encourage the learning process, making them remember, can manage the case better and decrease gap between teacher and students.

Conclusion

We found that using the chat group offers a new exciting process of learning to the medical students.
