Historically, clinical teaching in medicine at University of Chile was done by specialists. Due to the curriculum innovation in Medical School at University of Chile, tutoring in hospital clinical practice in the semiology course was conducted by general practitioners in their first three years after graduating. It became necessary to evaluate the tutors' performance from the students' point of view.
A cross-sectional study of the performance of 8 general practitioners (GP) as clinical teachers was conducted using “MEDUC30”, a validated self-administered questionnaire. It consists of 30 questions grouped in eight different learning domains: patient-based teaching, learning climate, session control, objectives, promoting understanding, evaluation, feedback and promoting self-learning. And an extra question to evaluate Total Global Assessment.
Demographic data:
- Age: 20 - 22
- 35 men (76%)
- 46 (100%) students in the class completed the questionnaire.
The scale score ranged from 1 to 4 points.
A score over 3 points was considered "good", and a score over 3.5 points was considered "very-good".
- Learning Climate (3.9)
- Tutor Global Assessment (3.7)
- Evaluation (3.7)
- Feedback (3.7)
- Objetives (3.6)
- Promoting Understanding (3.5)
Clinical teaching by GP had a very good evaluation by the students, who gave high scores both in the Global Assessment and in the domains evaluated, especially in Learning Climate, Tutor Global Assessment, Evaluation, Feedback, Objetives and Promoting Understanding.
This supports the use of GP in clinical teaching and suggests that they may play an important role in their formation.
We would like to express our special thanks to the patients who contribute to the formation of future medical doctors, to our colleagues and to the group of students.
