Facebook Medicine in Taipei Medical University
Background

Creative and up to speed physicians and health professionals find the use of trendy social networks a very efficient venue to aid and improve medicine in many aspects. Facebook’s excellent information distributing features and popularity are constantly expanded into the uses of medicine resulting in great benefits to both patients and health care staff. Thus, Facebook is making history for a lot more than just a network for finding long lost friends and greeting them with old time photos. Recently, physicians and medical educators are taking advantage of its constantly expanding features to efficiently post medical procedures and images of various important findings and observations, to quiz their students and staffs, to post training announcements (see figure), and anything that could be used for enhancing understanding and improving the quality of medicine.

Summary of Work

At Taipei Medical University Hospital and Wanfang Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, physicians are brilliantly exploiting Facebook’s features to enhance the teaching and practice of medicine using a Facebook maneuvered Echocardiology (Echo) course in a specially organized network group (WFH Echo Course). It’s a private social network and one must be invited to join. Currently, there are 386 members  interested in a sonography course taught using the Facebook features. We particularly can use the popular and practical features Facebook developed to enhance the understanding of new methods and techniques through videos, images, PDF files, power point slides and more.

However, the most important aspect is to allow and encourage comments and expansion of ideas from both in and outside of the class and to create interaction among learners, experts, and other experienced medical staff.

One major benefit of using Facebook in the Echo training course is making possible for everyone to participate around the clock or their available time. Furthermore, when both trainers and medical staff miss work or training sessions for various reasons (e.g. illness, training, conferences, vacations) it’s easy to keep everyone in the light; Facebook posts with Echo of the day images, videos and quizzes while making things fun and interesting gets all caught up to speed. We also use facebook to announce instructor’s available schedule and decide the solid course time by students' voting.

Moreover, because the echo course is a cycle of 12 topics the students will complete the course at different times. When the students finish the entire course, they will post one picture with the instructor on Facebook Echo course group to show off to other students their accomplishments.

Another advantage of using Facebook is that when instructors come across an interesting case the instructor will post the news on Facebook then students who are not in ER can came to ER for a bedside teaching opportunity. It is a kind of real-time learning.

Conclusion

The medical experience on Facebook continues to grow and improve in many aspects as it evolves and expands with the aid of science and new technology. The continuous improvising of Facebook’s features to support multiscope purposes can do a lot more than connecting friends, professionals, and various individuals in many purposeful and interesting ways. It can now enhance many aspects of modern medicine, but most importantly, Facebook can help change and save lives.
