Background

Medical students are unfamiliar with nasopharyngeal mirror examination. The  view  of nasopharynx  seen in the mirror  is not as clear as  textbooks. The nasopharyngeal box model  may help them understand nasopharyngeal  anatomy before  patients' examination.

Summary of Results

The mean score of nasopharyngeal box model group(11.77±3.22) was significantly higher than control group(9.07±1.64, p<.05).

Conclusion

Nasopharyngeal box models  may help the students to better understand and be able to identify the nasopharyngeal anatomy  and enhance students' skill in nasopharyngeal mirror examination.

Take-home Messages

Nasopharyngeal box model is cheap, simple and practical for practicing nasopharyngeal mirror in non -patient cycle.

Summary of Work

Nasopharyngeal box , size 3.5x4x1.2 cm.,made of printed paper, was used as  a teaching and learning model. The 27 fifth-year medical students in academic  year 2012 were divided into two groups. One group(13 students) used this model for practicing nasopharyngeal examination before examining patients. Instead of using the box ,the other group (14 students) studied nasopharynx from textbooks. Four anatomy structures of nasopharynx were clarified to both groups by the teacher before the real patients examination .These four structures were :posterior choana ,eustachian tube opening, nasopharynx and posterior pharyngeal wall. Both groups were assessed  for pathology identification by using  testing model. The testing model was designed in order to assess the capability of pathology identification in the real practice by adding anterior tongue, tongue base and soft palate. The scores of both groups were compared.
