College of Medicine, Alfaisal University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
•Team-based learning (TBL) and problem-based learning (PBL) are both founded on the benefits of small group learning.
oDuring TBL, students work together on questions to reinforce weekly lectures.
oDuring PBL, students reinforce anatomy and physiology knowledge by discussing clinical cases.
•TBL and PBL partially replaces solo memorizations with debates. Students will unconsciously reach all the levels of Bloom's Taxonomy’s educational learning objectives:
oKnowledge
oComprehension
oApplication
oAnalysis
oSynthesis
oEvaluation
•This study aims to explore the correlation between students' knowledge of anatomy, critical thinking and clinical application/integration and the new methods of teaching and assessment at the College of Medicine of Alfaisal University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
•First year medical student were given a survey about TBL. Second year of medical students were given a survey about PBL. The questionnaires included five evaluating options: Unacceptable, Very poor, Mediocre, Satisfactory and Excellent
Three hundred fifty four out of four hundred fifty five (78%) students participated in this survey.
The majority of students (67.5%) chose excellent and satisfactory for TBL and PBL as tools for stimulating, developing, and evaluating critical thinking.
.
“New assessment methods like TBL and PBL used at the College of Medicine of Alfaisal University should be a role model for other medical schools in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in the World.”
“Designing and performing weekly small group sessions in any disciple is a time well spent to advance intellectual capacity to judge and professional communication much needed in today’s globalized World.”
