Title
Assessment of the Implementation of Problem Based Learning model in Saudi Medical Colleges; a cross sectional study
Theme
Best Practice in Curriculum Planning, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation
Background
Problem based learning (PBL) is a method of which the students solve clinical scenarios in a small group discussion. The aim of this study is to assess the implementation of PBL in Saudi Universities.
Summary of Work
This is cross-sectional study 151 participants from 16 universities. A questionnaire distributed to the faculty members through email messages with 4 times reminder messages every 2 weeks. The questionnaire consisted of 35 questions in 5-points Likert scale arranged in 3 subscales.
The questionnaire consisted of two sections. The first section (5 questions) is asking about the general information of the participants (Academic status, Academic Background, University, Years of Teaching and years in PBL experience). Section two is the Likert scale grouped to 3 subscales about the PBL implantations.
Summary of Results
The total mean of PBL implementation score was 2.5, SD = 0.39. The score of the three PBL implementation subscales showed marked variance, with an average score of “Overall PBL Experience in my College” as the most highly affected, with an average score of (3.07, SD = 0.72). Followed by “Implementation of PBL model” (2.36, SD = 0.47). The least affected was “Preparation for PBL Implementation” (2.13, SD = 0.67).
Conclusion
Relatively moderate level of PBL implementation in Saudi Arabia. However, we suggest more courses should be done to raise the skills of faculty members and providing a strong infrastructure to implement PBL model in Saudi medical colleges.
