Background

The important of producing “good doctors” along with having professional behaviors has been emphasized in medical curricula. Buddhasothorn Medical Education Center aimed to produce doctors for rural residence of Thailand. We conducted a study to evaluate factors contributing medical students’ view of being good doctors.

Summary of Work

A cross-sectional survey was administrated in undergraduate students(year 4th -6th) during the year 2014. We used 5 point likert scale in questionnaire which reliability was test(Cronbach alpha= 0.967) and linear regression model to analyze the result. We also evaluated attitudes in their future career comparing themselves between before-and after- being clinical students.

Summary of Results

77 students returned their complete questionnaire(92.8%). Most students were female(62.3%), age between 21-23 year was 67.5%, higher GPA(above 3.00) was 67.5%.

Table 1 Characteristic of the participants

  Amount    Percentage
Gender
   - Female 48 62.3
   - Male 29 37.7
Age
   - 21-23 yr 52 67.5
   - > 23 yr 25 32.5
Clinical year
   - 4th 25 32.5
   - 5th 28 36.3
   - 6th 24 31.2
GPA
   - < 3 25 32.5
   - > 3 52 67.5

We found no difference in gender, clinical year and age in all aspects of attitudes. Students who had higher GPA(above 3.00) reported significantly towards 6 aspect of attitudes(figure 1). The majority of students(19/21, 90.4%) who did not initially admire their future career improved their attitude during the clinical years.
