Doctors constantly make decisions based on the observation of images; they are also required to obtain and to manage accurate medical-scientific iconography in different photographic or video formats, in order to be able to incorporate them in publications and scientific communications and/or to promote health among society.
This course looks at training medical students to use cameras to obtain good quality images taking into account the rights of patients as well as the legal and ethical aspects of the medical workplace.
This course offers this training to medical students at the University Rovira i Virgili in Reus (Catalonia, Spain). Trainees learn different methods to obtain photographic and video recordings for research or clinical purposes. They acquire the skills necessary to obtain quality images in any format while respecting the basic standards on ethics and professionalism. The trainees are also taught to take into account how our human visual system works.
Because optical illusions do exist we train medical students to avoid its consequences when medical images are observed...
We are medical students that have followed the elective course MEDICAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND AUDIOVISUAL COMMUNICATION IN MEDICINE at our University.
Combining the results from this course and our motivation for medical education allowed us to prepare this e-poster. We invite you to enjoy our results in video format located at the top right corner of this e-poster.
When combining essential tips and tricks to make a video, creativity and imagination…. You will find an unique way to communicate. More evidence about the impact of competences achieved by medical students following this course can be found into the You Tube channel of this course. Together with our Professor Maria Rosa Fenoll-Brunet we want to facilitate and promote the use audiovisual communication in medical education.
This elective course is not only considered of interest by/for medical students but also by the regional academic authorities.
As a trainer the challenge is to update this course yearly according to the advances of ICT, photography and video devices. Therefore, its contents, resources and syllabus are constantly being renovated.
I'll like to encourage medical education colleagues to share and promote educational experiences in the field of photography and audiovisual communication.
Extracted from trainee's opinions on this course:
- "I was not aware how human vision really works and how it may affects clinical decisions. Questions arose on things I had not previously though about before".
- "This course teaches you "how", and you really learn useful things, such as the application of photography to the world of medicine and the achievement of skills for obtaining video and photography".
- "Different from the rest of subjects!".
The training of future medical doctors must meet the needs in society. Rapid changes in the ICT field including photography and video are influencing and having a great impact in communication worldwide and also challenging health care systems. Therefore, it is crucial to embrace new trends and take them into account to train medical students accordingly.
